Phobias

A phobia is an anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of a specific object or situation. Phobias are more than just fear; they can seriously impact an individual's life. People with phobias will shape their lives to avoid what they perceive as dangerous or scary, even if the threat is minimal or non-existent.

People with phobias often recognize their fears are irrational but cannot control their reactions. Symptoms include intense anxiety and physical effects like sweating, chest pains, racing heart, and dry mouth. Panic attacks can also occur, causing additional distress, especially if exposure to the feared object or situation is frequent.

Phobias typically fall into four major categories:

  1. Natural environment (e.g., heights, storms)
  2. Animals (e.g., spiders, snakes)
  3. Medical treatments (e.g., needles, blood)
  4. Specific situations (e.g., flying, elevators)

Two common phobias with unique diagnoses are Agoraphobia and Social Phobia. A person with agoraphobia is afraid to leave environments they know or consider to be safe. In severe cases, a person with agoraphobia considers their home to be the only safe environment. They may avoid leaving their home for days, months or even years. Social Phobia, or social anxiety, is the fear of social situations and being judged or humiliated publicly. A person with social phobia may do their best to avoid contact with people they do not know or feel safe with.

Avoidance maintains phobias, so treatment often includes Exposure Therapy to help individuals alter their fear response. With a trained therapist, clients are provided tools to cope with physical and emotional symptoms while feeling in control of the process. Phobias are highly treatable, and therapy can help individuals live a life free from their fears.
