Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is the most common mental illness in Australia. According to Beyond Blue, on average, 1 in 4 people will experience anxiety in their life.
Suffering from anxiety is more than worrying about everyday life stressors or feeling anxious before something challenging. It is actually very normal to feel anxious or nervous as a response to a stressful situation given the uncomfortable feeling goes away once the stressful situation has passed. An anxiety disorder, however, is when these anxious feelings don’t subside. Anxiety is when they are ongoing and exist without any particular reason or cause. Anxiety is a very debilitating mental illness that can make it hard for a person to cope with daily life.
Some common symptoms of anxiety include:
- An intense feeling of dread or danger, sometimes related to a trigger but sometimes for no reasons at all
- Racing heart
- Tight, heavy chest
- Difficulty Breathing
- Racing thoughts
- Inability to think clearly or “brain fog”
- Chronic aches and pains in the body
- Hot and cold flushes
- Obsessive and compulsive behaviour
- Difficulty sleeping- either taking ages to fall asleep or waking early and not being able to get back
- Nausea or pain or “butterflies” in the stomach
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhoea and other digestive issues
The good news is that anxiety is very treatable and with the help of a professional psychologist you will be able to start living a life without constant worry or fear.
